Introduction: When Jealousy Turned Into Crime
The Qur’an does not hide the dark realities of human nature. Along with stories of mercy and forgiveness, it also presents incidents that warn humanity about unchecked emotions. One such powerful and painful incident is the story of Habil and Qabil.
This is the first recorded crime in human history — a murder committed not out of survival, but out of jealousy and anger. Allah mentions this incident not to shock us, but to protect future generations from repeating the same mistakes.

The Background of the Incident
Habil and Qabil were the sons of Prophet Adam (AS). Allah tested them both with a simple command: each was instructed to offer a sacrifice to Allah. The acceptance of the sacrifice would be a sign of sincerity and righteousness.
Allah says in the Qur’an:
“And recite to them the story of the two sons of Adam, in truth, when they both offered a sacrifice, and it was accepted from one of them and not accepted from the other…”
(Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:27)
This was a test of the heart, not a competition.
Habil and Qabil: Why Was One Sacrifice Accepted?
The Qur’an makes the reason very clear:
“…Indeed, Allah only accepts from the righteous.”
(Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:27)
Habil offered his sacrifice with sincerity and taqwa (God-consciousness). Qabil, however, lacked sincerity and allowed resentment to grow in his heart.
Instead of correcting himself, Qabil blamed his brother.
The Rise of Jealousy and Anger : Habil and Qabil
When Qabil saw that his sacrifice was not accepted, jealousy overtook him. Instead of turning to Allah, he turned against his own brother.
The Qur’an records his threat:
“I will surely kill you.”
(Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:27)
Habil responded with calmness, wisdom, and fear of Allah. He refused to fight back and reminded Qabil of accountability before Allah.
This moment shows us a painful truth:
One heart was controlled by taqwa, the other by ego.
The First Murder in History
Blinded by anger, Qabil committed the first murder. Allah describes the moment with deep gravity:
“And his soul permitted him to kill his brother, so he killed him and became among the losers.”
(Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:30)
Notice how Allah ends the verse — “among the losers”. Qabil did not gain anything:
- Not honor
- Not peace
- Not satisfaction
Only loss.
Regret Came Too Late
After the crime, Qabil stood helpless, not knowing what to do with his brother’s body. Allah sent a crow to show him how to bury the dead.
Allah says:
“Then Allah sent a crow scratching in the ground to show him how to hide the disgrace of his brother…”
(Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:31)
Only then did regret enter his heart — but regret without repentance does not heal the soul.
Powerful Life Lessons from Habil and Qabil
1️⃣ Jealousy Destroys the Heart First
Before harming others, jealousy destroys inner peace.
2️⃣ Allah Judges Sincerity, Not Appearance
Acceptance comes from taqwa, not outward action.
3️⃣ Anger Leads to Irreversible Damage
One moment of uncontrolled anger can change lives forever.
4️⃣ Innocence Does Not Protect from Evil
Even the righteous can suffer due to others’ sins.
5️⃣ Crime Begins in the Heart
Every major sin starts as a small unchecked emotion.
Relevance in Today’s World
This incident reflects modern realities:
- Family disputes over success
- Jealousy among siblings
- Crimes driven by ego
- Refusal to accept failure
- Blaming others instead of self-correction
The Qur’an reminds us that spiritual diseases, if untreated, become social disasters.
How Islam Teaches Us to Control Jealousy
- Make dua for contentment
- Thank Allah for what you have
- Ask Allah for purification of the heart
- Celebrate others’ success
- Remember accountability in the Hereafter
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Beware of envy, for envy consumes good deeds just as fire consumes wood.”
(Sunan Abu Dawood)
Conclusion: A Story That Warns Every Generation
The story of Habil and Qabil is not about the past — it is about us. It warns us to check our hearts before our actions destroy lives.
May Allah protect us from jealousy, soften our hearts with taqwa, and make us among those whose deeds are accepted.
🤲 A Short Dua
O Allah, purify our hearts from jealousy, anger, and arrogance, and grant us sincerity in every action.
